The AM General M35 series, sometimes referred to as the M44 from another model in the same range, dates back to truck designs produced in the late 1940's and is based on W.W.II experience. The M35 was used extensively during the Vietnam war for a number of roles.

This series evolved from a number of designs from several concerns rather than a single source, for AM General took over many companies such as Reo and Kaiser Jeep who produced similar vehicles. Originally petrol engines were used, but eventually these were switched to diesel, multi-fuel, and multi-fuel turbo engines.

Although production had ceased by 1989, new variants continued to appear for some time. These included cargo, tanker, drilling, mobile workshop, pipe-laying, tractor, and workshop versions.
