M62 Medium Wrecker

The AM General M54 series, sometimes referred to as the M39 from another model in the same range, was developed after the end of WWII. The new design replaced vehicles in the 4, 5, 6, and 7 1/2 ton class. This chassis was used extensively during the Vietnam war for a number of roles.

This series evolved from a number of designs from several concerns rather than a single source, for AM General took over many companies such as Reo and Kaiser Jeep who produced similar vehicles. Originally petrol engines were used, but eventually these were switched to diesel, multi-fuel, and multi-fuel turbo engines.

The M62 Medium Wrecker uses the M-40C basic chassis, and was designed to tow or recover disabled vehicles up to 9,072kg cross-country, or 13,608kg on road surfaces. The crane at the rear is hydraulically operated, using the engine to run the hydraulic system.
